Jeg ser og får med meg alt for ofte i hamstermiljøet at noen spør om en lyd er normalt hos hamsteren også kommenterer folk at den bare er pratsom når det tydelig er luftveis problemer og sykdom på gang. Dverghamstere som lager lyder er 99% av tiden syke og trenger medisinsk hjelp ASAP. Vokale hamstere er svært sjeldent en ting og av egen erfaring er aldri vokale hamstere pratsomme 24/7 men kun i spesifikke situasjoner som gjør dem glade. Stressede og skremte hamstere kan skrike og lage lyder som tyder på misnøye, gjerne hvesing og fresing. Og hamstere som kvitrer/chirper, klikker, nyser, fnyser er ikke gode tegn og nesten alltid symptomer på sykdom eller irritasjon av luftveier av miljøet.

Causes
Enviroment:
Sand is often a common cause for respitory irritation and symptoms. There are many unsafe sands sold in the petshops. Ive made a separate post all about sand and safe / unsafe types of sand. Short overview, unsafe sands; catsand (bentonitt) will promote symptoms and respitory irritation, scented sand is unsafe and will also cause symptoms and issues, most chinchiolla sands and dusts are unsafe and cause issues.
Substrates can also be a cause for issues, cedar and fir are unsafe and can cause respitory issues. Scented substrates and very dusty substrates can also cause symptoms and issues. Unsafe substrates that im aware causes issues are vitakraft, chipsi with citrus, clean & cozy with lavender. Other scented substrates, made from unsafe wood types and such as well as being overly dusty can also cause issues. Also a separate post made on safe and unsafe substrates.
Individual allergies can also happen meaning something that is safe can give symptoms due to an allergic reaction despite not being a problem for the majority of other hamsters.
Treatment
Hamster with symptoms of a respitory infection or symptoms need the vet ASAP so it doesnt become a chronic issue or turn into pneumonia. Treatment is often antibotics and similar medications.
Allergies
Allergy symptoms consist of sneezing, itching, redness and irritation of the skin. Often noticable after the introduction of something new the hamster havent had before or that they havent been around much. They can become allergic to foods and substrates.
Luftveis infeksjon
Det følger gjerne med nysing, vektnedgang, dårlig matlyst og letargi, kroket rygg, utstikkende/ståpels i nakken, slapp, våt ved øyne og nese.
Irritasjon av luftveier
Kommer gjerne av uegnet substrat og sand i buret. Høres gjerne i form av klikkelyder / kvitre/chirpe lyder.
De kan også bli frustrerte av å bli plukket opp når de ikke ønsker det, ofte sagt fra med i form av skriking, hvesing og fresing og dermed biting og napping.
Endring i adferd er ofte ett av de mer synlige symptomene på sykdom.
