Herbs and herbmixes

Herbs, flowers and plants are an important part of the dwarf hamster's diet. Roborovski eat about 10% plant material with a need for a little more when they get older for their fiber intake. Campbells, winter white and hybrids have slightly greater needs of between 10-20%.

 

Herbs, flowers and plants have many important minerals and vitamins but also other important substances such as tannic acid, alkaloids, saponins, inulin, flavonoids and many more. All of these are important as part of a balanced diet and have their roles in the body.

Plants in the cage can be such a great type of enrichment for the hamsters and also nice decoration making the cage more green and lively but it is very important that the plants are safe for the hamsters to eat and consume. So no plastic or unsafe plants should be in the cage. Some individuals may also have allergic reactions to some plants like the aster family of plants and some like basil can give of very strong smells which can cause avoidance of that end of the cage.

Safe flowers:

 

  • Allium (A. cyathophorum, A. obliquum, A. sikkimense)

  • Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)

  • Marigold (Tagetes erecta)

  • Iris flavissima

  • Iris ruthenia

  • ​Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

  • Clover (Trifolium)

  • Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus)

  • Alfalfa flower (Medicago sativa)

  • Dandelion (Taraxacum)

  • Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare)

  • Ramtillablom (Guizotia abyssinica)

  • Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

  • Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

  • Pansy (Viola tricolor)

    Daisy (Bellis perennis)

Dry in airfryer at 80C / 176F till the flowers are dry unless other temperatures are mentioned.

Safe herbs:

 

  • Alfalfa

  • Basilikum (Ocimum basilicum). Kan lukte litt sterkt hos enkelte hamstere. Lukter ekstremt mye om de blomstrer. Både lilla og grønn kan brukes.

  • Dill (Anethum graveolens)

  • Fennikel (Foeniculum vulgare)

  • Koriander (Coriandrum sativum)

  • Persille (Petroselinum). Både blad og krusepersille er trygge så fremst hamsteren ikke er drektig eller har nyresykdom.

  • Sitronmelisse (Melissa officinalis)​

  • Timian (Thymus)

  •  

  • Alyssum desertorum

  • Alyssum simplex

  • Berteroa incana

  • Blåbærlyng

  • Buskmure (Dasophora fruticosa)

  • Brennesle

  • Calathea Ctetante burle maxii. Dette er en helt trygg plante å bruke i bur hos hamster da den er ikke giftig og ikke irriterende for hamster. Hunder og mer så katter kan oppleve dårlig mage av planten men dette forekommer av fiberinnholdet i den noe hamster tåler fint.

  • Callisia repens / Golliwog. Har en del kalsium så anbefales ikke for senior hamstere.

  • Carex stipata

  • Chinese milk-vetch (Astragalus sinicus)

  • Dracocephalum peregrinum

  • Equisetum scirpoides

  • Jordbær plante

  • Krypmure (Potentilla reptans)

  • Mariatistel ()

  • Peperomia. Eneste problemene vil være om hamsteren er allergisk.

Sprouts and grasses:

 

  • Legume sprouts. The sprouts of legumes does not have the same issues raw legumes have when hamsters consume them as the sprouting process removes the lectins making them safe for hamsters to consume raw.

  • Brokkoli sprouts

  • Nasturtium sprouts

  • Chia

  • Pea sprouts

  • Grass. Most companies treat lawn seeds with pesticides which makes them toxic to ingest!! Dont use seeds meant for lawns.

  • Oat sprouts

  • Wheat sprouts

  • Cat grass

  • Needle grass (Ptilagrostis)

  • Rye (Secale cereale)

  • Sunflower sprouts (Helianthus annuus)

Safe house plants:

 

  • Calathea

  • Callisia repens / Golliwog

  • Plantain (Plantago major)

  • Spiderplant (Chlorophytum comosum) Remove flowers and offshots as the flowers or more so the seeds in the flowers are toxic when ingested. The plant itself is however very safe to consume.

  • Heather (Calluna vulgaris).
